FOX & Family talks to CEO about Returning to Work after Maternity

Recently, FOX & Family sat down with Jennifer Brown, CEO of Jennifer Brown Consulting, and Catherine Crawford, a stay at home mom returning to work after maternity leave.  Jennifer helped Catherine overcome the obstacles set up by societal norms with returning to work after maternity leave.

Jennifer Brown Consulting is a firm based in New York City. Their focus is on helping men and women in all levels of their career paths succeed no matter what their personal situations are.  The firm hopes to redefine leadership in the workplace. The firm works with mainly on-rampers by giving tips on how to enter the workforce efficiently. They offer seminars and workshops along with personal consultations. Along with consulting with Working Mother Media/Diversity Best Practices, they work with companies ranging from State Farm to The New York Times.

From learning how to redirect inappropriate personal questions in an interview (i.e. Catherine was asked-by a woman interviewer-how she planned on getting to work every morning on time with three kids at home), to explaining resume gaps with skills learned in motherhood, Jennifer and Catherine combine to show how returning to work after maternity leave can work, even if you are completely changing careers.

Remember…

  • Network with everyone you know; friends, family, coworkers, etc.  Pick their brain about today’s workforce and learn from it.
  • When on an interview, stand your ground when asked awkward questions about your personal life. Redirect the conversation to job relevant qualities you can bring to the position.
  • Explain and fill resume gaps. Don’t forget to mention positions in community groups and organizations, no matter how small the position.
